Why trading session timing matters
Forex operates 24 hours a day, but not all hours are equal. Volume, volatility, and spread width vary dramatically depending on which major financial centres are active. Trading during high-volume sessions means tighter spreads, better liquidity, and more reliable price action.
The four major sessions
- Sydney (22:00–07:00 UTC): Quietest session. Lower volatility, suitable for AUD and NZD pairs.
- Tokyo (00:00–09:00 UTC): Asian liquidity. JPY pairs most active. Ranges often tighter.
- London (08:00–17:00 UTC): Highest single-session volume. EUR, GBP pairs most active. Major price moves often start here.
- New York (13:00–22:00 UTC): USD pairs dominate. Economic releases (NFP, CPI) typically at 13:30 UTC.
The London–New York overlap: the best trading window
Between 13:00 and 17:00 UTC, both London and New York are open simultaneously. This 4-hour window accounts for roughly 70% of all daily forex volume. Spreads are tightest, liquidity is deepest, and price moves are most reliable. Most professional forex traders focus their activity in this window.
Session gaps and volatility spikes
When one session closes and the next has not fully opened, volume drops and price can "gap" or move erratically on thin liquidity. Avoid placing orders without stops during these transition periods, especially the Sydney open (Sunday 22:00 UTC) when the week begins.
