What is a pip and why does pip value matter?
A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest standardised move in a currency pair. For most pairs it is 0.0001 — the fourth decimal place. For JPY pairs, it is 0.01 — the second decimal place. Knowing pip value in dollars is essential for calculating real risk before placing any trade.
How pip value is calculated
For USD-quoted pairs (EUR/USD, GBP/USD, AUD/USD), pip value is straightforward:
For cross pairs (USD/JPY, USD/CHF), the calculation involves the current exchange rate and varies slightly. The values shown here are approximations based on typical market rates.
Standard vs mini vs micro lots
- Standard lot (1.0): 1 pip = $10.00 on EUR/USD
- Mini lot (0.1): 1 pip = $1.00 on EUR/USD
- Micro lot (0.01): 1 pip = $0.10 on EUR/USD
Most retail forex brokers offer micro and mini lots, making it possible to trade with precise risk control even on small accounts.
